Privacy Policy

1. Overview
Orca (“we”, “us”, “our”) helps you discover and connect anonymously with people nearby who share your interests. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
2. Information we collect
Account details: When you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, first and last name, and Google account ID. We use Google’s official Sign-In SDK, which provides us with a secure ID token — we do not receive your Google password or access to your Google account. During profile completion, we also collect your date of birth and gender.
Profile details: an auto-generated anonymous username (e.g. “QuietFalcon482”), bio, profile photo or anonymous avatar, interests, and who you’re looking to connect with.
Location: your device’s GPS coordinates (or a location you manually search for) are used to find people and calculate approximate distance. We store your coordinates and resolved address to power discovery.
Activity: connection requests you send or receive, and messages you exchange with connections.
Device and usage data: basic technical information (such as network status) needed to operate the app reliably.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to: show you relevant people nearby based on shared interests and distance; let you send and respond to connection requests; enable messaging between connections; personalize your feed; and maintain the safety and integrity of the platform.
4. What other users can see
Other users never see your real name. Your public profile shows your username, profile photo (or anonymous avatar, if you choose), bio, approximate distance, general location name, and shared-interest highlights. You control your visibility (everyone, same gender only, or hidden) in your discovery settings.
5. Data sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your data with third parties except: (a) service providers who help us operate the app (such as cloud hosting and storage), under confidentiality obligations; (b) when required by law; or (c) to protect the rights, safety, or property of Orca, our users, or the public.
6. Data retention
We retain your account and activity data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your profile, interests, connections, and messages are permanently removed from our systems, except where retention is required for legal or safety reasons.
7. Your choices
You can edit your interests and profile at any time from the Profile tab. You can switch between GPS-based and manually-selected location. You can choose to display an anonymous avatar instead of your real photo to other users. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data from Profile › Danger Zone › Delete Account.
8. Children's privacy
Orca is not intended for use by anyone under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from minors.
9. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), JWT-based authentication with rotating refresh tokens, and access controls. Google Sign-In uses OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect — your Google password is never transmitted to or stored by Orca. Authentication is handled entirely by Google’s servers, and we only receive a verified ID token containing your basic profile information. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We’ll notify you of material changes through the app. Continued use of Orca after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
11. Google Sign-In and third-party services
Orca uses Google Sign-In, powered by Google’s OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect protocols, for authentication. When you sign in, Google issues an ID token that we verify on our backend. We request access to your basic profile information (name and email) via the openid, email, and profile scopes. We do not request access to your Google Drive, Contacts, Calendar, or any other Google services. You can review and revoke Orca’s access to your Google account at any time by visiting Google Account Permissions. Google’s use of your information is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.
